'Evening of Romance' tickets now on sale
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Tickets are now on sale for the Purdue Jazz Band's sixth annual "Evening of Romance," which will celebrate Valentine's Day on Feb. 11 at Lafayette's Holiday Inn City Centre Hotel.The cabaret-style event, which recreates the atmosphere of big band dance clubs — where couples came to enjoy music, dancing, food and each other's company — offers seating at candlelit tables surrounding the dance floor.
Detroit vocalist Kathy Kosins, who performed at one of the very first Evening of Romance events, returns in 2006 to sing with the Purdue Jazz Band under the direction of M.T. "Mo" Trout.
Known for her expressive, sultry voice, Kosins has been described by the Chicago Tribune as possessing "one of the most alluring voices in jazz," and is a three-time American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) award-winning songwriter with more than 200 compositions to her name.
The evening will be a mix of instrumental and vocal numbers. Among the tunes Kosins will sing are "The Very Thought of You," "Going to Chicago," a new arrangement of "These Boots are Made for Walking" and "Penthouse Serenade," also known as "When We Are Alone."
The Evening of Romance starts at 8 p.m. Feb. 11 in the hotel's grand ballroom and runs to approximately 10:30 p.m. At intermission a dessert buffet will be offered and a jazz combo will perform on the hotel mezzanine. Gourmet coffees and a cash bar will complete the romantic experience.
For the first time this year, the room layout for the Evening of Romance includes a limited number of tables for two at the edge of the dance floor. Other tables in the cabaret seat eight and guests can chose their seating preference when tickets are purchased. Couples and individuals wishing to sit together as a group need to make reservations at the same time.
Tickets are $17.50 per person and include the dessert buffet. Tickets are only on sale through the Purdue box office; call (765) 494-4933 or (800) 914-SHOW. Organizers anticipate a sell-out, so those interested are encouraged to make reservations early. If last-minute tickets become available, they will be sold at the door.
