Purdue launches team for INShape Indiana initiative

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Hoping to turn the tide of endless candy and treats on Halloween, the Purdue University WorkLife Programs and Student Wellness Office will work together to encourage students, faculty and staff to make healthy choices.

As part of the statewide INShape Indiana program recently announced by Gov. Mitch Daniels, members of the Purdue community are encouraged to sign up for the united university's team at a Hallowellness Health Fair at the Recreational Sports Center from 2-8 p.m. Oct. 31.

The health fair will include stress-relief massages, various health screenings, virtual sobriety tests, a blood drive, nutritious food, giveaways and informational material. It is sponsored by Recreational Sports.

"By being more active, eating better and avoiding tobacco, Hoosiers will greatly reduce their risk of serious illness," said Angela DeMano, WorkLife Programs physical activity graduate assistant. "We hope participation is strong across campus to help boost Purdue to the lead to be Indiana's fittest university."

Those who would like to participate also can enroll in the program at the INShape Indiana Web site. The site connects residents with existing programs, services and events in the area that will help them reach their wellness goals. Participants are asked to sign up for the program and then formulate a personal fitness plan using existing statewide resources. Every two weeks, residents are asked to update a brief health profile, which allows them to track their own progress and for the program to gauge how participants across the state are doing.

Benefits of participating in the program include discounts on healthy food and workout rates.

The state program is led by the Governor's Council for Physical Fitness and Sports.
