October 19, 2005 4-H youth development educators awardedWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Indiana Extension Educator Association on Tuesday (Oct. 18) honored several Purdue University 4-H youth development educators during Purdue Extension's annual conference banquet. Dorothy Campbell of Marion County received the Innovator Award for her work with the Community Systemwide Response team in designing the Freedom Through the Arts Youth Program. The program, created to promote a drug-free lifestyle and prevent other delinquencies, was offered five weeks through the summer and three days during winter break at no expense to participants. The Junior Award was presented to Joanne Lytton of Carroll County. Lytton provided materials to Carroll elementary school to address the needs of character education. Each teacher received a teaching packet, and administrators were given a calendar with a thought for the day. Every month a schoolwide project was coordinated on a specific character trait. Newsletters also were sent home monthly to encourage parental involvement. Barbara Bowman of Brown County was awarded the Senior Award for her work in sexual assault, rape and domestic violence prevention. Bowman conducted two domestic violence conferences for individuals from law enforcement, social service agencies, school personnel, courthouse and members of the clergy. Fifteen sexual assault and rape prevention workshops were held at junior and senior high schools. The Career Award honoree for 4-H youth development this year was Jane Beard of Davies County. Beard showed dedication to the betterment of youth and education though her various programs, such as Project LEAD (Legal Education to Arrest Delinquency), 4-H Horse and Pony Therapeutic Riding, and the White River Antique Festival Youth Program.
