October 17, 2005 Activities to mark Domestic Violence Awareness WeekWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Starting today (Monday, Oct. 17), the Clothesline Project will be on display in the Purdue Memorial Union Main Lounges as part of Domestic and Intimate Violence Awareness Week. Strung up with shirts decorated by Tippecanoe County victims, their families and friends, the Clothesline Project is designed to shed light on the problem of domestic violence. The Clothesline Project will be on display at Purdue Memorial Union through the week. "The Clothesline Project is one of the most moving and informative events at Purdue each year," said Christina Schowe, Purdue Student Union Board's director of ideas and issues. "It is astounding how many people do not know the extent of domestic and intimate violence in America, and the Clothesline Project is eye-opening and educational." Other activities during the week include: Noon Monday Opening ceremonies in Purdue Memorial Union Great Hall will feature the mayors of Lafayette and West Lafayette. A rape survivor also will speak. 7:30 p.m. Monday Certified sex lecturer Jay Friedman will speak in Stewart Center's Fowler Hall. His lecture, "The J-Spot: A Sex Educator Tells All," will be aimed at educating individuals about the problems of violence in society and how to prevent them by building healthy relationships. 7 p.m. Tuesday A speak-out on Purdue Memorial Union's first floor near Starbucks will give survivors of violence a chance to gather together in a safe space to talk about their experiences. 7 p.m. Wednesday Starting and ending on the Union's front steps, the Take Back the Night March will be an hourlong walk around campus with the purpose of making the night safe again for men, women and children. Participants will gather at the Union to hear a speaker, march around campus and then return to the Union for refreshments and live music. 7 p.m. Friday A vigil will be held at Purdue Memorial Union's front lawn to remember those who have suffered at the hand of violence. The Clothesline will also be taken down. Sponsors of the events include the Purdue Student Union Board, Purdue Panhellenic Association, Purdue University Interfraternity Council, Alpha Chi Omega, Women's Resource Office, the Office of the Vice President of Human Relations, Student Wellness Office, Purdue University Student Health Center, YWCA Domestic Violence Intervention & Prevention Program, POWER, Lafayette Crisis Center, Greater Lafayette Sexual Assault Prevention Coalition.
