October 12, 2005 Purdue employees combine fun and philanthropy for United WayWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. In a year full of calls for charitable help, Purdue employees have mobilized in creative ways to ensure local needs are met by helping the Greater Lafayette United Way campaign meet its annual goal for the 31st consecutive year. The Department of Housing and Food Services, located in the Smalley Center, is leading the way with a spirited week full of baby bragging, door decorating, brownie baking, blind bidding and denim donning. "It's strictly on a voluntary basis," said Allyson Hodge, director of conferences and community relations. "We're having lots of fun, building camaraderie and helping a great cause." The week began Monday with a contest featuring baby photos of staffers; the person who identified the most participants won a photo album. Tuesday's mystery raffle had employees bidding on merchandise donated by co-workers. Today (Oct. 12) is the bake sale from 8:30-9:30 a.m. and 1:30-2:30 p.m. From 8-11 a.m. Thursday is a silent auction of employee-donated merchandise. On Friday, cash donations will allow donors to wear denim to work. Several employees have entered the door-decorating contest. Throughout the week, coworkers can vote for their favorite door by making cash donations. The door with the most donations in its name wins. Doors have included such themes as "Fall in line with the United Way" and "What can you bring to the table?"
