Purdue provost appoints new position to help map diversity plan

Kauline Davis

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University announced that Kauline Davis has been appointed to the new position of assistant to the provost to help with addressing diversity issues, effective today (Monday, Sept. 26).

Davis also will work closely with the provost and the vice provost for academic affairs on preparation of materials for the board of trustees and the Indiana Commission for Higher Education.

"The work that Dr. Davis will be doing for me and the vice provost is critical to keeping our board and the Indiana commission fully informed about academic programs and curricular issues across the Purdue system," said Provost Sally Mason. "In addition, she will continue to work very closely with me on all issues relating to diversity across the university. She will be helping to craft and prioritize much of the internal and external work that we hope to accomplish in the future on improving the climate at Purdue for all students, faculty and staff."

Raised in Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean, Davis earned her bachelor's degree in premedicine from Prairie View A&M University in 1991 and her master's degree in microbiology and genetics from Purdue in 1998. She completed her doctoral program in August in Purdue's Department of Food Science.

She has worked at Purdue since 1993 when she was supervisor for the testing center in the Office of the Dean of Students. Davis moved into Women in Science Programs in 2003, where she also has served as assistant director of multicultural science programs.

"In my role in Women in Science Programs, I have encouraged students to try to understand what it's like to be a minority, whether due to race or gender," Davis said. "I'm looking forward to taking part in the team that will look at a broad range of issues that will help make Purdue University preeminent in every regard."
