Campus activities

– Charlie Ross, professor of English, will present "Translating Statius' 'Thebaid'" at 8 p.m. on Sept. 29, in Rawls Hall, Room 1086. This lecture is sponsored by Purdue's Interdisciplinary Classics Program and the Purdue Classics Association.

Faculty and staff honors

– Maribeth C. Schmitt, a professor of education and director of the Purdue Literacy Network Project, has been inducted into The Manchester Who's Who Registry of Executives and Professionals. The registry honors those who have made significant achievements in their professions. Schmitt has been involved in literacy education for 20 years and is affiliated with the National Reading Conference, the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development and Phi Delta Kappa. She also serves on the Reading Recovery Council of North America and is a former president of that organization. Schmitt earned a bachelor's degree in French, a master's degree in education and a Ph.D. in education, all from Purdue.

– Sheryl Kline, assistant professor of hospitality and tourism management, is the 2005-06 winner of the Arnold I. Cohen Faculty Development Endowment Award. This award is given in memory of Lafayette and area restaurateur Arni Cohen and sponsored by his family and friends. The award will be announced on Tuesday (Sept. 27) in the Stewart Center's Loeb Theater. The funds awarded to Kline will support her commitment to develop research expertise on the issue of return on investment (ROI) in training for hospitality industry businesses. This is the second year the award has been given. Last year's winner was Richard F. Ghiselli, associate professor of hospitality and tourism management.

– Hubert Schmieder, chef emeritus, was inducted recently into the Honorable Order of the Golden Toque, a group of the top 100 chefs in the country, in ceremonies at Sullivan University in Louisville, Ky. The Honorable Order of the Golden Toque was established to give recognition to chefs with at least 20 years of service. Membership is open only to chefs who are nominated by three active members. Schmieder was a chef instructor for 11 years at Purdue, and has been team captain of the U.S. culinary Olympic team. He conducts seminars using mostly Indiana commodities, and remains active in many committees.
