Campus activities

– Kristina Bross, associate professor of English, will present "Feminism and Pedagogy: A Roundtable Discussion" from 12:30-1:30 p.m. on Sept. 28 in Stewart Center, Room 311. The presentation is part of the Women's Studies Noon Lecture Series.

– Scott MacDonald, professor of philosophy at Cornell University, will present "Prudence: Aquinas on the Foundations of Virtue, Happiness, and Natural Law," at 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 29 in Beering Hall of Liberal Arts and Education, Room B268. The lecture is part of the Department of Philosophy's 2005 colloquium series.

– American Studies will begin its fall lecture series, Globalization, Transnationalism and the Future of American Studies. Upcoming talks include:

• Oct. 14, 2-4 p.m. in Stanley Coulter Hall, Room 239. Sonia Saldivar-Hull, professor of English and director of the Women's Studies Institute at University of Texas-San Antonio will present "Gender, Border Studies and American Studies."

• Oct. 28, 2-4 p.m. in Beering Hall, Room B268. Mark Bernstein, the Joyce and Edward Brewer Chair in Applied Ethics at Purdue's Department of Philosophy, will present "Animal Rights, Human Wrongs."

• Nov. 11, 2-4 p.m. in Beering Hall, Room B268. Daniel Morris, professor of English in Purdue's Department of English, will present "On Aesthetics and Identity: Marjorie Perloff's Vienna Paradox."

The American Studies Program, housed in the College of Liberal Arts, offers graduate courses and seminar work in all aspects of American culture, with particular emphasis on the nation's racial, ethnic, gender and regional diversity. Fifty students are currently pursuing master's and doctorate degrees in the program.

Awards and honors

– Purdue's Dick and Sandy Dauch Alumni Center won the 2004 Best Brick Project Award from the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers. The award recognizes exemplary craftsmanship and service, and was presented as part of the executive council's June meeting in St. Louis. Members of Local 4 Indiana/Kentucky, working for James Scharer Masonry Inc., built the award-winning multistory brick and limestone curtain wall exterior, embellished with arches and limestone detail.
