Panhellenic Association to hold annual plant sale

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University's Memorial Union will be in full bloom when the Panhellenic Association holds its annual plant sale fundraiser on Monday (Aug. 29) through Friday (Sept. 2).

Hours for the sale will be 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday.

"The North Ballroom will be transformed into a tropical greenhouse featuring houseplants ranging in size from 3-inch potted plants to 6-foot indoor trees and seasonal accents," said Panhellenic Association adviser Diane Blackwelder. "All proceeds from the sale will go to help support our educational programming and scholarship fund to benefit the entire Greek community."

Patty Jischke, first lady and wife of Purdue President Martin C. Jischke, will be on hand for the opening of the plant sale at 10 a.m. Monday. The Purduettes will be performing from 11:30 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. on Wednesday.

Workers at the sale all will have a Greek affiliation; undergraduate students and alumni will volunteer their time to help with the event.

Now in its 28th year, the plant sale is the only fund-raising project of the Purdue Panhellenic Association. The group receives no state funding or money from the university's activity fees.

"We're really excited about the plant sale this year," Blackwelder said. "It's a great draw for students, faculty, staff and the public. Bennett's Greenhouse is working with the Panhellenic Association to provide plants suitable for residence halls, offices, apartments or homes."

Admission to the sale is free, and plant prices begin at about $3. In addition to plants, supplies such as pots, soil, fertilizer and watering cans also will be available.

About 5,000 visitors are expected to attend the event, Blackwelder said.
