August 19, 2005 Purdue to make strong showing at Farm Progress ShowWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The 2005 Farm Progress Show in Decatur, Ill., which is Aug. 30 to Sept. 1, will include many Purdue University exhibits. The 52nd annual Farm Progress Show will be open to the public from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Aug. 30-31, and from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 1. Admission is $7 for adults, $3 for youth ages 13 to 17, and ages 12 and under are free. Purdue Agricultural Systems Management will feature a grain yield monitor simulator. This simulator was created by undergraduate students and lets visitors learn how to properly calibrate and operate a grain yield monitor before harvest season arrives. Purdue Agronomy experts will help visitors with questions about cropping systems and plant nutrition, environmental soils and landscape processes, genetic improvement of economic crops, and turf and the urban interface. Purdue Agriculture will feature an exhibit with career opportunities in the food, fiber and natural resource systems in the United States and around the world. Other Purdue displays will include: The Education Store, where visitors can learn about Purdue Extension opportunities to become a better homeowner, parent, student, steward, entrepreneur, farmer, gardener, civic leader and more. Biotechnology - A Tool for Changing the Recipe, shows how scientists can develop plants that react better to drought, disease and insects. EAB: The Green Menace, where visitors can learn different ways the emerald ash borer can be controlled to help save ash trees. Homeland Security: Purdue Extension will explain an individual's role if the national threat level of terrorism is raised. The exhibit will also offer disaster recovery resources for Indiana communities and families. New Ventures Marketing Tool: Offered by the Purdue New Ventures Team, visitors thinking of starting an agricultural or food business can get help from team members to develop a plan and find resources that can help them get started. Purdue Consumer and Family Sciences will offer two exhibits. "Where Does Your Money Go?" will show visitors how to avoid spending leaks so they can use their money for more important needs and bigger rewards in the future. "Watch Your Weight" will tell visitors how to make healthy eating and exercising decisions. Purdue will be sharing a tent with the University of Illinois as a partnership of the two land-grant universities involved in the event. In addition to the exhibits, educational seminars will take place at Richland Community College, which is adjacent to the Farm Progress Show site. "Chris Hurt, a Purdue professor of agricultural economics, will be giving a crop and livestock outlook with Darryl Goode from the University of Illinois," said Danica Kirkpatrick, Purdue College of Agriculture events and educational activities coordinator. "Other Purdue presenters will include Rick Foster on alternative farming options and Jerry Nelson of the New Ventures Team on marketing and value-added food products."
