Faculty and staff honors

– David Williams, a professor of medical illustration, was awarded his third Literary Award on July 31 during the Association of Medical Illustrators' 60th annual conference in Thousand Oaks, Calif. The Literary Award is for the best refereed written contribution by an AMI member published in the Journal of Biocommunication the previous year. Williams' award-winning paper is titled "The History of Werner Spalteholzs Handatlas der Anatomie des Mensch." The paper was originally presented at the 50th Anniversary Conference of the Medical Artists Association of Great Britain at Oxford University.

– The Purdue chapter of the Mortar Board National College Senior Honor Society was recently named one of 18 outstanding chapters at the national conference held July 22-24 in Columbus, Ohio. Chapters are selected for the Golden Torch Award based on criteria that includes standards of the Mortar Board constitution and exemplifying the ideals of scholarship, leadership and service. Mortar Board is a national honor society that recognizes college seniors for outstanding achievement in scholarship, leadership and service.

Student honors

– Several Owen Hall residents and educational programs recently received awards. Kimberly Chapman was selected as the Don Hummel Outstanding Hussar Scholarship recipient. The scholarship is based on grade-point average, campus leadership and activities, and service to the Hussar Club, the student organization for Owen Hall. Chapman, a sophomore in the College of Agriculture, also served as club secretary during the past academic year.

The National Residence Hall Honorary, a branch of the National Association of College and University Residence Halls, also honored two Owen Hall programs and one resident assistant with monthly awards. The halls Project Move Out was named the regional community service program of the month for May and a life-size Monopoly game was named the campus social program of the month for April. Kelly Smith, a Woodstock, Ill., native and recent graduate of the College of Liberal Arts, received the campus award as Resident Assistant of the Month for April.

– Two Purdue students have been awarded scholarships from the Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society for First Year Students. Lynn Rostron, a junior pharmacy student from Fort Branch, Ind., and Laura Delaney, a junior in the College of Science from Carmel, Ind., received the Jo Anne Trow Undergraduate Scholarships for the 2005-06 academic year. Both Rostron and Delaney were residents of Hillenbrand Hall when they applied for the scholarship. Each year Alpha Lambda Delta awards 35 Trow scholarships to outstanding students across the country. The competition is open to sophomore members of the honor society. Selection is based on academic records, participation in Alpha Lambda Delta activities, personal statements, and campus and community involvement.
