July 26, 2005 Purdue to have strong presence at third Farm World ExpoWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue University Cooperative Extension will offer a series of seminars covering topics relevant to today's farmers Aug. 2-4 at the Farm World Expo at the Wabash Valley Fairgrounds in Terre Haute, Ind. Each day Purdue Extension specialists and other experts will speak on a new topic on a special Purdue stage at the event. The seminars, which are free and open to the public, on the Purdue stage will begin at 9 a.m. and will end at noon each day. On Aug. 2, crop-pest issues will be discussed. Speaker Larry Temple, agronomy manager with Growers Co-op, will talk about soybean rust, and Glenn Nice, Purdue weed science expert, will give audiences a 2005 weed update. Purdue agricultural economists Chris Hurt and Craig Dobbins will discuss farm financial issues Aug. 3. Purdue animal scientists Ron Lemenager and Alan Sutton, along with agricultural economist Alan Grant, will speak on livestock regulatory issues on Aug. 4. "Basically, each speaker will talk for 20 minutes each hour, during a three-hour period each day," said Dave Blower, an editor at Farm World newspaper, which produces the Expo. "The reasoning behind it is that folks who visit farm shows may not want to commit an hour of time to one thing. Also, if they miss a session, there is a chance to come back and catch it later." In addition to the Purdue Extension seminars, entertainment highlights of the Expo include a cooking show, antique tractor pull, antique tractor displays and daily parades, the Farm World Expo farm-toy show and antique appraisals. For children attending, there will be a petting zoo featuring favorite barnyard animals and a kids' tractor pull. Visitors can also watch cattle-handling demonstrations, horse-and-rider clinics, a Live Line safety demonstration or attend a health fair. The Purdue stage will be open to visitors 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Aug. 2; 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Aug. 3; and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Aug. 4. Parking for the Farm World Expo costs $5 per vehicle; $1 of each parking fee will be donated to the Indiana FFA Foundation. Admission is free.
