Purdue NotebookJuly 8, 2005 Faculty and staff honors Purdue's Karen Haberstroh, an assistant professor of biomedical engineering, and Thomas Webster, an associate professor of biomedical engineering and materials engineering, have received 2005 Early Career Awards in Translational Research from the Wallace H. Coulter Foundation. The awards are issued to young researchers whose work offers promise in developing new medical technologies with the goal of progressing toward commercialization and clinical applications. Information about the awards is available online. Mark A. Pagano, Purdue's dean of continuing education and conferences and a professor of mechanical engineering technology, received the James H. McGraw Award at last month's American Society of Engineering Education annual conference. Established in 1950, the award is presented for outstanding contributions to engineering technology education. Pagano was recognized for his accomplishments as an outstanding educator, administrator and contributor to the field. In the Department of Mechanical Engineering Technology, Pagano developed a number of courses on thermal energy and won awards for outstanding teaching. Kerry England, online communications editor for Purdue Periodicals, earned a $1,000 grant from the Indiana Arts Commission last month. The grant will be used to defray costs related to development of a new education website for beginning French horn students at the middle school, junior high and high school age levels. The Indiana Arts Commission awarded more than 80 grants for the coming fiscal year. England also is an instructor in the Purdue Department of Bands, founder of the Indiana Horn Ensemble and a board member of the Indiana Wind Symphony.
