June 22, 2005 2005 Tippecanoe County Butterfly Count set for July 16WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Volunteers are needed on July 16 to assist in taking a census of all the butterflies sighted within the Eli Lilly and Co. Wildlife Habitat Area in Lafayette. The Tippecanoe County Butterfly Count is sponsored by Eli Lilly and Co. in conjunction with the Purdue University Department of Entomology. Results of the count will be submitted to the North American Butterfly Association for its annual report. This report will include information on the geographical distribution and habitat changes of many different species of butterflies. No prior experience is needed to participate. There will be butterfly identification training starting at 1 p.m. for all volunteers, and the actual count will begin at 2 p.m. The count will end at 4:30 p.m., followed by a 5 p.m. picnic provided by Lilly for all participants. Parking will be available next to the baseball facility south of Eli Lilly's main entrance at 1650 Lilly Road. The 2005 Tippecanoe County Butterfly Count also will be combined with naturalist-led nature walks. In the event of rain, an alternate date has been set for the same time on July 17.
