School of Veterinary Medicine offers workshops for horse owners

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine will provide practical, hands-on instruction for horse owners, breeders, trainers and general enthusiasts in a series of two workshops.

The Equine Joint and Soundness Workshop on June 11 will feature a selective look at joint anatomy and common joint lameness problems. Participants will learn about the many musculoskeletal ailments that afflict horses and what can be done to treat them.

On Nov. 12, the Respiratory Diseases: Throat and Lungs Workshop will focus on upper and lower airway problems with an emphasis on treatments and prevention. The workshop is designed for the athletic horse owner/trainer and/or enthusiast.

All sessions will be at the Equine Health Sciences Building, located behind the Large Animal Hospital on Purdue's West Lafayette campus. Sponsored by Nutrena, a company that makes pet and feed products, the workshops will feature hands-on laboratory sessions, practical demonstrations and short-topic presentations.

Featured workshop speakers include: Steve Adams, professor of large animal surgery; Laurent Couetil, associate professor of veterinary clinical sciences and director of the Equine Sports Medicine Center; Jan Hawkins, associate professor of large animal surgery; Bill Hope, clinical assistant professor of equine ambulatory medicine; Karin Kooreman, assistant professor of basic medical sciences; Tim Lescun, assistant professor of large animal surgery; Michel Levy, associate professor and chief of large animal medicine; Janice Sojka, associate professor of large animal medicine; and Mark Russell, professor of animal sciences.

Registration fees are $150 per workshop, which includes lunch. Late fees apply after May 18 for the first workshop and after Oct. 12 for the second workshop.
