Purdue NotebookApril 22, 2005 Faculty and staff honors Susan J. Maller, associate professor of educational studies, was presented the award for 2004 best paper at the annual 2005 American Educational Research Association Conference in Montreal. Her paper, entitled "The Comparison of Deaf and Core UNIT Standardization Sample Profiles," was co-written with graduate research assistant Jason Immekus and P.A. McDermott, professor at University of Pennsylvania. Maller is an expert on psychological and educational testing. She also is a sign-language interpreter. Jerry M. Woodall, distinguished professor of electrical and computer engineering, has been named the 2005 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Jun-ichi Nishizawa Medal recipient. He was recognized for "pioneering contributions to the liquid-phase epitaxy in the GaAs/AlGaAs systems, including applications to photonic and electronic devices." Dwight E. Lewis, director of minority programs for the Graduate School, won a service award from the National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers. The award was announced at the organization's 32nd annual meeting, which took place March 20-26 in Orlando. Lewis was one of 15 organization members honored for volunteerism efforts. Lewis served as adviser to the Black Graduate Association from 1985 to 2003 and has been instrumental in developing programs in support of minority student enrollment and retention at Purdue since 1987. Student honors A team of three students from the Department of Consumer Sciences and Retailing placed second overall in the American Express Financial Planning Invitational, which took place April 13-16 in Minneapolis. Team members were Kevin Boesore, a senior from North Manchester, Ind.; Matt Berry, a senior from Kewanna, Ind.; and Melissa Richardson, a senior from DeMotte, Ind. The team placed first in the game-show segment of the competition. Each of the students received a $300 prize for the game show victory and $300 for the second-place overall finish. The Department of Consumer Sciences and Retailing received $5,000 to award as scholarships in the coming school year. The team's faculty adviser was Sharon DeVaney, professor of consumer sciences and retailing.
