Purdue seeks public input on fees for students

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue officials have scheduled an April 22 public hearing to invite comments on the tuition and mandatory fees to be paid by students attending any of the university's campuses during the 2005-06 and 2006-07 academic years.

The meeting, which will be conducted by Purdue administrators and members of the university's board of trustees, will begin at 3 p.m. in Stewart Center, Room 326. A videoconference connection also will permit public input from the Purdue Calumet, Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne and Purdue North Central campuses.

"At this point, we are unable to establish tuition rates for the next two academic years because the Indiana General Assembly has not finalized appropriations for higher education," said Purdue President Martin C. Jischke. "However, we believe it is important to conduct this public hearing before the end of the academic year while our students, their families and other interested parties have easier access to our campuses. This will be a valuable opportunity for them to provide comment, share their thoughts and concerns, and help us understand what their priorities are as we build the university budget."

To facilitate scheduling, those intending to speak at the hearing should notify the Office of the Board of Trustees in advance at (765) 494-9710 or trustees@purdue.edu. Written comments also may be submitted via e-mail or can be sent to Office of the Board of Trustees, Hovde Hall, 610 Purdue Mall, West Lafayette, IN 47907.

Anyone wanting to participate in the meeting at one of the statewide campus locations should contact the chancellor's office at that campus for directions to the videoconference location. Those locations and phone numbers are:

• Purdue Calumet – Gyte Building, Room 103; (219) 989-2204.

• Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne – Kettler Hall, Room G20; (260) 481-6103.

• Purdue North Central – Technology Building, Room 134; (219) 785-5433.

Each speaker will be allotted five minutes to make comments.

Purdue's systemwide general fund budget for 2004-05 is $851.2 million. Student fees account for 53 percent of the general fund, while the remainder comes from other sources, including about 39 percent from state appropriations.
