College of Consumer and Family Sciences to honor alumni

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue University College of Consumer and Family Sciences will honor four of its graduates as distinguished alumni at 5 p.m. Friday (April 15) during an awards dinner.

Patricia P. Baker, Evelyn B. Enrione, Karen Mallin and Connie Wiemann will receive distinguished alumni awards. Others being recognized include Roy Beaumont as outstanding young professional, Phyllis Baker Gladden and Ann Brewer McNamar for community service, and Candice Lange as a friend of Purdue.

• Baker, of Marion, Ind., earned a bachelor's degree in clinical/administrative dietetics in 1977. She is manager of nutrition and food service at the Veteran's Administration Northern Indiana Health Care System, where she began working as a clinical dietician in 1979. She oversees the operation of two facilities to ensure veterans receive nutritious meals.

• Enrione, of Miami, has been associate dean at Florida International University since 1994. She earned her doctorate in human nutrition in 1983. Her academic and research interests focus on medical nutritional therapy and outcomes related to patient care and therapeutic evaluation.

• Mallin, of Miami, received her master's degree in child development and family studies in 1984. She is an instructor at the University of Miami School of Medicine. Her work focuses on children and adults with skin diseases that cause mental distress for them and their families.

• Wiemann, of Houston, is associate professor in the Department of Pediatrics' section of adolescent medicine and sports medicine at Baylor College of Medicine. She received her doctorate in child development and family studies in 1990. A teacher and researcher, she studies high-risk behaviors, such as substance abuse, sexual behavior and interpersonal violence, among adolescents.

• Beaumont, of Bethesda, Md., is the director of select service brand management at Marriott International. He earned a bachelor's degree in hospitality and tourism management and a bachelor's degree in public relations in 1994, and an MBA in marketing and international management from the Krannert School of Management in 1997. He has worked in the hotel industry worldwide, holding positions in public relations, marketing strategy and management, and he founded a Purdue alumni chapter while living in Germany.

• Gladden, of Avon, Ind., earned a bachelor's degree in consumer and family sciences in 1960. She and her husband, Frank, run a 4,000-acre farming operation. She has been a member of the Home Economists Guild of Indianapolis for more than 40 years, serving as its president in 1999-2000, and founded the Fairfield Historic Preservation Society. In 2001 she received the Hidden Diamond Award from the School of Consumer and Family Sciences.

• McNamar, of Indianapolis, earned her bachelor's degree in vocational home economics in 1962. She taught home economics to high school students for several years, and was involved with volunteer projects. Since 1982 she has been a member of the board of directors for the Indiana Ronald McDonald House, which provides a place to stay for parents who have children at Riley Hospital for Children.

• Lange, of Indianapolis, is director of human resources and work force partnering at Eli Lilly and Company. She earned a bachelor's degree in pharmacy in 1976. She is responsible for Lilly's work/life agenda and the company's diversity and education strategies.
