April 6, 2005 Purdue Theatre to end season with 'Metamorphoses'WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Purdue Theatre will end its 2004-05 Mainstage Season with the presentation of Mary Zimmerman's "Metamorphoses" on April 14-24 in Stewart Center's Experimental Theatre.
The play, which is based on the classic works of the poet Ovid, will be directed by visiting theater instructor Jeff Casazza. "Metamorphoses" opens at 8 p.m. on April 14, with additional 8 p.m. performances scheduled for April 15-16 and April 19-23. Sunday matinee performances also will take place at 2 p.m. on April 17 and April 24. The April 19 event, a rare Tuesday evening performance, will be followed by a discussion session led by Casazza. "Zimmerman's play offers a unique mix of comedy, tragedy and music, and it really breathes new life into many of the epic tales and myths of Ovid," Casazza said. "The play melds together many of the most timeless of emotions, including love, loss, obsession and inspiration. It juxtaposes the ancient and the contemporary in language and image to reflect the variety and persistence of narrative in the face of inevitable change." Originally produced by the Lookingglass Theatre Company in Chicago, "Metamorphoses" won a Tony Award for best director and was nominated for best play and best scenic design. Among the Ovid works the play addresses are the myths of King Midas, Cupid, Psyche, Aphrodite and Orpheus. Performances of "Metamorphoses" include full nudity, and viewer discretion is advised. Tickets for the show are $8 and $10 for students, $10 and $12 for senior citizens, and $14 and $16 for the general public.
