March 29, 2005 Latino Cultural Center celebrates second year with winning artistWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Purdue's Latino Cultural Center will feature artwork by the winner of a local art contest from 1-3 p.m. on April 16 during its second annual anniversary, called "Dia de la Familia," or Day of the Family.
"Since the LCC opened in 2003, we have designated this day to honor the people who helped us grow," said Maricela Alvarado, the center's director. "We call this 'Dia de la Familia' because we recognize our supporters as family." The winner of the art contest is Jhose Melin Maxson, a student from Harrison High School. His work will be on display at the Latino Cultural Center, at 503 Harrison St., South Campus Courts B, and is on the LCC Web site. The contest was the center's first art contest and was open to all students attending Purdue University, Ivy Tech State College or a Tippecanoe County high school. "We are so grateful to every artist who gave a piece of their heart to enter this contest," Alvarado said. "It was very difficult to choose one winner, but we felt Jhose's entry depicted the family image we were trying to project at our special anniversary celebration." Maxson also will design the logo for next semester's Latino Heritage Month, Alvarado said. This year, the nationally designated celebration of Latino culture and history will take place on Sept. 15 through Oct. 15. The theme is "Cultura, Libertad, Passion," or Culture, Liberty, Passion. The art contest was part of the center's outreach efforts this year to local students. The Latino Cultural Center is Purdue's first center for Hispanic and Latin culture. The center strives to provide a venue where people of similar cultures, values, customs and language can unite to share ideas and events with the university and the community.
