March 25, 2005 Deadline nears for Span Plan adult nontraditional student grantsWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. The deadline is April 15 for adult nontraditional students to apply for a Span Plan Grant for Purdue University's summer 2005 session. The Span Plan Adult Student Services program was established at Purdue in 1968 to serve the needs of older-than-average students and helps them adjust to the university environment. Academic, career and personal counseling also is available for adult learners through the Span Plan program. The grants cover the cost of a three-credit-hour class and include a book stipend for students who either do not receive financial aid or whose financial aid award does not cover the full cost of tuition and fees. Grants are available to students enrolled at Purdues West Lafayette campus as well as the Lafayette location for Statewide Technology. To be eligible for the Span Plan Grant, a student must be an individual who: has not taken a traditional path to higher education and does not hold a bachelor's degree; is enrolled in five or fewer credit hours for the summer 2005 session; is in good academic standing; and falls within the financial need guidelines. Grant applications are available in Schleman Hall, Room 207, or online. April 15 also is the deadline for another Span Plan program, the Cecilia Zissis Graduate Student Grant. The grant, established in 1987 to recognize Zissis' 37 years of service to Purdue and her commitment to graduate students, is available to part-time graduate students who demonstrate academic potential and financial need. In order to be eligible for the Zissis grants, which are in the amount of $750 or more, students must be admitted to a degree-seeking graduate program at Purdue and be enrolled in at least one three-hour graduate course for the fall 2005 semester. Grant applications are available in Schleman Hall, Room 207, or online. Applicants for both grants are encouraged to schedule appointments with a Span Plan counselor for further information about the course registration process and for a complete overview of services offered by Span Plan Adult Student Services. To request an application or for further information, contact the Span Plan staff at (765) 494-1257, spanplan@purdue.edu.
