Appointments and promotions

– Patricia Davies, a professor of mechanical engineering at Purdue, has been named director of the university's Ray W. Herrick Laboratories. Davies replaces Robert Bernhard, who had been director since 1994 and was recently named associate vice provost for research for centers and institutes. Davies came to Purdue in 1989. She earned doctoral and master's degrees from the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research at the University of Southampton in Great Britain in 1985 and 1981, respectively. She earned a bachelor's degree in 1977 from the University of Bristol, also in Great Britain. Davies specializes in research regarding noise and vibration and has been a leader in interdisciplinary efforts related to perception-based engineering.

Campus activities

– Students who are nearing graduation and intend to become future faculty will get a head start from a class offered by the Graduate School called "Preparing Future Faculty." The class has been offered twice and also will be offered again next year. Students must register for the class the prior semester. The course explores faculty life in a variety of ways. Guest speakers have included administrators from other colleges and deans, administrators and faculty from Purdue. A reception for students from the two previous courses will be from 5-6:30 p.m. Tuesday (March 8) in the Purdue Memorial Union's Anniversary Drawing Room.
