Purdue NotebookFebruary 21, 2005 Campus activities Larry Braile, a professor of in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, will present a talk, entitled "The Magnitude 9.0 Andaman Islands-Sumatra Earthquake and Tsunami of 26 December 2004," at 3:30 p.m. Monday (Feb. 28) in Smith Hall, Room 108. The talk will include information about the region's earthquake history and factors that contributed to the large degree of damage and death toll. Such factors include the lack of a tsunami warning system and adequate rapid communication systems. Purdue's Graduate School will sponsor Coffee with the Dean from 10:30-11:30 a.m. on today (Monday, Feb. 21) and Friday (Feb 25) in the Dick and Sandy Dauch Alumni Center. The event is open to current students who hold fellowships from the Graduate School and alumni who held those fellowships during their time in graduate school. "We hope that this event will help bridge the gaps between our current students and our top alumni," said John J. Contreni, Graduate School dean. "Many of those alumni have even taken faculty positions on campus, and they can offer our current students invaluable advice and networking opportunities as the students plan their careers. We also want to foster a sense of community among fellowship students " The event is invitation-only. The Graduate School currently provides fellowships to 700 hundred master's and doctoral students.
