Department of Curriculum and Instruction to offer lecture series

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Patti Lather, a professor of cultural studies in education at Ohio State University, will speak Feb. 24 at Purdue University as part of the fledgling College of Education's Department of Curriculum and Instruction Distinguished Lecturer Series.

Lather's lecture, entitled "Scientism and Scientificity in the Rage for Accountability," is scheduled for 5:30-6:30 p.m. in Stewart Center, Room 206. The talk, which is free and open to the public, represents the department's first Distinguished Lecturer Series event.

The presentation by Lather, who earned a master's degree in American studies from Purdue in 1972, will focus on issues related to scientifically based research in today's climate of educational accountability. A brief question-and-answer session also is scheduled.

Lather obtained a bachelor's degree in English from South Dakota State University and a doctorate in curriculum and instruction from Indiana University. Among the honors she has received is the Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching, Ohio State's highest teaching honor.
