Workshop slated for youth interested in dairy industry

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The first Indiana Dairy Youth Conference, organized by the Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service, will take place March 12 at the Hamilton County Fairgrounds in Noblesville.

The event, for youths ages 8-18, runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Workshop activities will include making liquid nitrogen ice cream and five-minute mozzarella cheese, a quiz bowl, and selecting and feeding a show-winning heifer.

"Youth attending the workshop will be exposed to many aspects of the dairy industry, including food science," said Kelly Easterday, a Purdue Extension educator in Kosciusko County. "This workshop will give youth knowledge of opportunities, like scholarships and travel, available within the dairy industry."

The workshop will provide a hands-on learning laboratory, showcase educational aspects of raising and showing livestock, and provide networking opportunities with other youth interested in dairy and interaction with Purdue Dairy Club members, Easterday said.

Registration is $15 per person and is due by March 7. Checks should be made payable to Indiana Professional Dairy Producers. The fee includes handouts, a T-shirt and lunch. To register, contact your local Extension office or visit the state 4-H home page and click on the "What's New" link. For more information or questions, contact Easterday at (574) 372-2340.

The conference is co-sponsored by the Dairy Marketing Service LLC, Foremost Farms USA, Indiana Milk Quality Professionals, Indiana Professional Dairy Producers and Milk Promotion Services of Indiana Inc.
