Student leaders to be rewarded with scholarship opportunities

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University students with demonstrated leadership skills can earn scholarships worth as much as $4,000 for the 2005-06 school year through the Class of 1937 Scholarship Program.

Applications are being accepted for the scholarships, which are awarded to full-time undergraduate Purdue students with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 who have shown evidence of leadership ability. Eligibility for financial aid through Purdue's Division of Financial Aid is not a requirement for the scholarships, although personal financial need is a criteria considered by the scholarship committee.

The Class of 1937 Scholarship Program has sought to award at least 10 scholarships each year since 1987, when alumni from that class first established an endowment. Scholarship amounts range from $500 to $4,000, with the number of scholarships and their amounts determined each year depending on the endowment's earned interest.

"It happens to be the case that good leaders might not always have the best grades," said Lou Ann Hamilton, Class of 1937 Scholarship Program Committee chairperson. "These scholarships are particularly attractive because grade requirements are within reach of many students and eligibility for financial aid is not a requirement."

The application process includes a standard informational questionnaire, a financial resource questionnaire and a one-page essay. Previous applicants and scholarship recipients are eligible to apply.

Applications must be turned in to the Office of the Dean of Students, Schleman Hall, Room 207, by March 1. All applications then will be considered by the program's committee, with an announcement of recipients following no later than April 15.

Applications are available at the Office of the Dean of Students as well as at the Black Cultural Center, 1100 Third St., and at the Purdue Student Government Office, Stewart Center, Room G-6. Applications also are available online.
