January 20, 2005 PMO gets in tune with area grade school studentsWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Purdue Musical Organizations will hold an educational performance for area fifth- and sixth-graders at 9:30 a.m. Feb. 3 in Elliott Hall of Music. "It's an opportunity for these young students to learn about different types of music," said Derrick Williams, PMO director of recruitment and retention. "They will hear different styles and learn where the music originated." Performing will be the Purdue Varsity Glee Club, Purduettes and Purdue Bells. The performance will include a broad range of musical styles to enhance the learning experience, Williams said. This is the 15th year PMO has presented the concert for fifth- and sixth-graders. Last year more than 1,700 area students attended the performance. "Music education can enhance the overall learning experience," Williams said. "Because musical programs are being cut throughout the country, it's critical that we make sure students get some of this basic musical background." Teachers interested in sending students can contact Williams at (765) 496-3934.
