Purdue NotebookJanuary 14, 2005 Appointments and promotions Abraham L. Cross has been appointed director of development for Purdue's College of Technology. Since 2002 Cross had served as director of development for Purdue's College of Education. He also worked in non-profit management for 14 years, including an eight-year stint as editor and CEO of Delta Upsilon fraternity in Indianapolis. He holds a bachelor's degree in urban affairs from the University of Tampa. Campus activities The Center for Instructional Excellence will have a dedication ceremony featuring a speech from Purdue Provost Sally Frost Mason at 11 a.m. Jan. 26 in Young Hall, Room 730. An open house will take place from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m., with refreshments provided. The Audiology and Speech-Language Clinics at Purdue are offering speech, language, voice and hearing screenings in February for Purdue employees, including graduate staff and retirees. The screenings are from 8:30 a.m. to noon on the following dates: Feb. 7, Stewart Center, Room 302. Feb. 22 and 23, Owen Residence Hall, Busby Lounge. March 1, Shealy Residence Hall, Recreation Room. To schedule an appointment, call (765) 494-4229. Walk-ins will be accepted based on availability. Each screening takes about 15 minutes. Clinic instructors and students from the Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences will screen for speech, language, voice and hearing disorders. Speech and language disorders can include voice problems, fluency disorders and sound production problems. The hearing screening evaluates hearing loss. The screenings are being offered in conjunction with Purdue's WorkLife program. Faculty and staff honors Three Purdue administrators have been named to leadership positions with the Central Association of College and University Business Officers. Morgan R. Olsen, Purdue executive vice president and treasurer, has been reappointed to the group's board of directors and serves on its nominating committee. He served as the group's president in 2003. Douglas E. Shields, Purdue's Web services administrator, has been appointed to the association's Collegiate Management Institute Committee, and Charlie Miller, a Purdue senior financial analyst, has been reappointed as volunteer coordinator for the group's Member Relations and Communications Committee. The Central Association of College and University Business Officers is a nonprofit group representing chief business officers at more than 700 institutions throughout the north-central region of the United States. Alok R. Chaturvedi, associate professor of management, has been named a Sagamore of the Wabash in recognition for his work in homeland security. Chaturvedi, director of Purdue's Homeland Security Institute since 2003, has organized computer-based simulations in which officials from federal, state and local agencies tested responses to terrorist situations. The simulations, held in the Envision Center, utilized hand-held wireless computers linked to supercomputers at Purdue and Indiana University. Chaturvedi's field of expertise is management information systems, and he developed the "war games" computer-simulation technology used in the Homeland Security Institute simulations. Klod Kokini, associate dean of academic affairs and professor in mechanical engineering, is the recipient of the Dreamer Award, sponsored by the Office of the Vice President for Human Relations. The award recognizes members of the university community for service that brings the university closer to fulfilling the dream of Martin Luther King Jr. Kokini will be recognized Monday (Jan. 17) during the university's program to honor King.
