Purdue Extension offers CAFO compliance conference

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Livestock producers who must comply with the new Indiana concentrated animal feeding operation (CAFO) rule have another deadline looming on the horizon. Al Sutton, a professor of animal sciences at Purdue University, said CAFO operators have until December to get a conservation practice plan on file with the Indiana Department of Environmental Management.

"They'll also have to have a storm water pollution prevention plan in their file in the near future," he said.

To help producers understand what they need to do, Purdue Extension is offering the IP videoconference, "Complying with the New CAFO Rule."

The conference is slated for Feb. 10 at 6:30 p.m. (EST) and can be viewed at 14 locations throughout the state. Registration deadline for free materials is Jan. 21. After the deadline, participants may attend for free, but materials will cost $25.

Sutton said the meeting is geared toward livestock and poultry producers who have confined feeding operations that have been designated as CAFOs by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM).

"We're also inviting other interested producers, technical service providers, consultants, and anyone involved with soil conservation practice plans, storm water pollution prevention plans or nutrient management planning," he said.

The agenda includes presenters from IDEM, the Natural Resources Conservation Service and Purdue Extension. Topics include a CAFO rule update, soil conservation practice plans, nutrient management planning and storm water pollution prevention plans.

"Producers will walk away with a clear understanding of what they need to do to develop a soil conservation practice plan and a storm water pollution prevention plan," Sutton said. "We also plan to have some example plans available for registrants so they can get an idea of what a complete plan looks like."

"Complying with the New CAFO Rule" is a follow-up to a previous Purdue Extension conference about CAFO regulations.

"At the first conference, we explained in detail what the new CAFO rule is and the deadline that must be met, but in this program we want to give more details on specific items producers need to stay in compliance," Sutton said. "However, it's not necessary to have attended the first conference to attend this one."
