January 4, 2005 Purdue and Indiana Horse Council to offer conferenceWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Purdue University's therapeutic riding center, called Chaps, and the Indiana Horse Council will present the annual Indiana Horseman's Conference on Jan. 22 at the Marten House in Indianapolis. "We have a great program planned and are excited about moving the conference to Indianapolis," said Colleen Brady, Purdue Extension equine specialist. "We will address some issues vital to horse owners, such as the impact on the horse industry of the national animal identification system." Registration will begin at 7 a.m., and the conference will kick off at 8 a.m. with a welcome from conference coordinators. Lunch will be offered to attendees at noon. Topics to be discussed during this program include how to recognize symptoms of illness in a horse and equine dentistry and mouth care. During the afternoon session, participants will be given a choice of two different session tracks: nutrition or disaster prevention. The nutrition track will offer topics ranging from the equine digestive tract, geriatric horse care, forage and hay analysis, and supplementing energy and minerals. The disaster prevention track will feature topics such as the national animal identification system, disaster planning, horse disease control and prevention, and emergency first aid. Question-and-answer sessions will follow both track programs. Cost to register for the conference is $50 for Indiana Horse Council members and $65 for non-IHC members if paid by Jan. 15. Cost for late registration is $75. Checks can be made payable to Purdue University. A registration form is available online at the Indiana 4-H Horse and Pony Web site.
