December 14, 2004 Hermodson interim leader of Purdue ag research programsWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue University College of Agriculture has named Mark Hermodson interim director of Agricultural Research Programs. Hermodson, a professor of biochemistry, will serve as interim director while the college conducts a national search to fill the position. The director's position opened when Randy Woodson was named dean of Purdue Agriculture. "Mark is an ideal choice to serve in this capacity," Woodson said. "He is a former department head, has a strong understanding of our college's research capacity and will be a great leader during this time of transition." Agricultural Research Programs facilitates research at Purdue by providing administrative support to faculty, ensuring the availability of necessary facilities and encouraging the development of interdisciplinary research programs. Purdue Agriculture annually conducts about $46 million in externally sponsored research. The group also helps faculty identify and compete for outside funding opportunities, operates eight Purdue Agricultural Centers throughout the state and works closely with Purdue Extension to transfer the research-based knowledge generated by Purdue faculty and staff to the citizens of Indiana. Hermodson began working at Purdue in 1977. He served as head of biochemistry from 1981 to 2001 and began serving as deputy director of the Bindley Bioscience Center at Purdue's Discovery Park in 2003. He will continue his duties as deputy director of the Bindley Center while he serves as interim director of Agricultural Research Programs. Hermodson's research expertise is in proteins and cell membranes.
