October 27, 2004 Purdue Extension seminar answers wood finishing questionsWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - A Nov. 10 Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service workshop will provide tips for dealing with one of the most troublesome areas of wood manufacturing, finishing wood products. "Furniture is sold on the basis of appearance, not on construction methods, and there are numerous ways to mar finishes and affect appearance," said Dan Cassens, a Purdue Extension specialist. The seminar, Solutions for Your Top 20 Wood Finishing Problems, will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Matterhorn Restaurant in Elkhart, Ind. Registration is $60 or $50 per person for groups of three or more. Advance registration is encouraged, but participants can sign up at the door. Seminar topics include sanding procedures and techniques, wood finishes and stains, new developments in finishing equipment and technology, and solutions to common wood finishing problems. Cassens said suppliers continue to improve existing products or develop new ones, and this program will bring industrial wood finishers up to speed on the latest. "This seminar is geared toward managers, owners, supervisors and lead finishers," he said. "Past participants have told us the seminar was well worth the time and money and very informative."
