Seminar includes Purdue ag perspective on world hunger issue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - A Purdue University agricultural expert will be among the speakers during Finding a focus ... Feeding a Hungry World, a seminar focusing on world hunger sponsored by the Indianapolis Metro Ministries.

The seminar will take place Nov. 19 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at North United Methodist Church, 3808 N. Meridian St., Indianapolis. This event is open to the public, and the cost is $15, which includes lunch.

"This is a powerful and informative seminar that will take a look into the depths of world hunger and solutions to the problem," said event coordinator Jack Haefling. "This event will also look into the agriculture industry, politics, distribution and how Indiana fits into the picture."

Purdue's Jess Lowenberg-DeBoer, director of international ag programs and team leader of Purdue's West Africa Project, will be among the speakers.

Keynote speaker for the event will be Jim Morris, executive director of the United Nation's World Food Program in Rome. Morris is the former president of the Lilly Endowment and former executive committee member of the U.S. Olympic Committee. He will discuss the issue of world hunger and current food programs in Third World countries.

Other seminar topics will cover food distribution and production, U.S. food programs, world food programs, food supplies, food for oil, food for power (Sudan and Zimbabwe), and international trade agreements.

Other speakers include: Bob Thompson, Gardner Chair in Agricultural Policy at the University of Illinois, former director of Rural Development World Bank, and former chairman of the International Food and Ag Policy Council; Bob Forney, president of American's Second Harvest; Don Villwock, president of Indiana Farm Bureau; and Morton Marcus, columnist and director of the Indiana Business Research Center.

There also will be a roundtable panel discussion and question-and-answer session at the end of the seminar.

Preregistration is recommended by Nov. 16. Mail registration and registration fee to: Feed the World Seminar c/o North UMC 3808 N. Meridian St, Indianapolis, IN 46208. Walk-in registration will be will be accepted, but lunch will not be available.
