October 20, 2004 Purdue Extension team honored for child-care trainingWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service presented the Ann Hancook Award to a team of Extension specialists and educators who developed a training program for child-care providers. The award was announced Tuesday (Oct. 19) during the annual Purdue Extension banquet. The Ann Hancook Award was given to the team responsible for the Indiana Non-Formal Child Development Associate Credential Training Initiative. Team members included: Extension specialist Dee Love and 4-H coordinator Roylene Laswell, both working on the Purdue West Lafayette campus, and Extension educators Jean Akers, Warren County; Sue Berg, Monroe County; Reba Colley, Clark County; Judy Hauser, Jasper County; Daphne Heiny, Floyd County; Nancy Hunter, Boone County; Denise Schroeder, White County; and Susan Tharp, Clinton County. In response to a need for child development associate credential training, this team of Extension specialists received a grant from the Indiana Association for the Education of Young Children. This enabled the team to provide non-formal CDA credential classes for child-care providers in several rural counties that did not have access to this training. The Purdue Extension CDA program included 120 classroom hours in the form of three 40-hour courses, plus 24 hours of advising in preparation for the national CDA assessment. The program was conducted from November 2003 through May 2004. The Hancook Award is presented annually in honor of Ann Hancook, a Purdue Extension program leader, who died in 1993. The award recognizes Extension educators and specialists who jointly create programs focusing on families. Award sponsors are the Indiana Extension Educators Association; Purdue University Cooperative Extension Specialists Association; and the Alpha Lambda Chapter of Epsilon Sigma Phi, the Extension honorary society.
