Community leaders give $141,000 to Campaign for Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University officials today (Tuesday, Oct. 19) announced four gifts totaling $141,000 from Lafayette-West Lafayette community leaders for the $1.3 billion Campaign for Purdue.

Purdue President Martin C. Jischke made the announcement during a breakfast with community executives at the Holiday Inn Select in downtown Lafayette.

Murray Blackwelder, senior vice president for advancement, said the community's support for the campaign is an important component of the university's success.

"We couldn't be more pleased that businesses and individuals have stepped forward to contribute to the areas for which they feel the most passion," Blackwelder said. "Their commitment to Purdue is making a profound difference. Others are watching their lead and following their example."

Richard Borgens, Mary Hulman George professor of applied neuroscience, also spoke to the group about his team's paralysis research.

The following have pledged or given support to the Campaign for Purdue:

• The Shook Agency, a commercial and residential brokerage firm affiliated with Coldwell Banker, gave a $50,000 gift, which will support an alcove on the main floor of the new Dick and Sandy Dauch Alumni Center devoted to the early history of Purdue. The alcove is part of the alumni center's Spurgeon Hall of Spirit, which showcases Purdue's points of pride and achievements. The 67,000-square-foot, $16 million alumni center was dedicated Friday (Oct. 15) during the university's Homecoming weekend.

• Lafayette Savings Bank Co. will give $21,000 to Purdue Musical Organizations to support an endowed scholarship.

• Greater Lafayette Health Services will give $20,000 to the School of Nursing's Nurse Managed Care Program.

• Sandy Pearlman, West Lafayette, will give a $50,000 deferred gift to benefit the School of Liberal Arts and Honors Program scholarships. Pearlman is an active community volunteer and serves on Purdue's Community Campaign Committee.

The Campaign for Purdue seeks to raise funds to support student scholarships; recruitment and retention of faculty; and programs, centers, and facilities.
