Media can interview visiting Grenada vet students, faculty displaced by hurricane

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – On Tuesday (Oct. 5) media will be able to interview a group of veterinary students and faculty from Grenada, West Indies, who will be continuing their studies at Purdue's School of Veterinary Medicine after being displaced by Hurricane Ivan.

Students and faculty from the St. George's University School of Veterinary Medicine will be available to talk with media from 3:30-4:15 p.m. in Lynn Hall, Room G167, about Hurricane Ivan and their move to Purdue. Lynn Hall is located on Harrison Street, west of Marsteller Street, on the south side of campus.

Prior to resuming studies on Wednesday (Oct. 6), the group will be taking part in an orientation session on Tuesday that will be followed by guided tours of Lynn Hall and a dinner scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in the Lynn Hall commons area. Media will be able to shoot photos and video of the tours and dinner.

Journalists interested in attending the media availability or interviewing St. George's students and faculty should contact Kevin Doerr, School of Veterinary Medicine, at (765) 494-6304, kdoerr@purdue.edu, or Jesica Webb, Purdue News Service, at (765) 494-2079, jwebb@purdue.edu.

Ivan hit the 122-square-mile island as a category 4 hurricane on Sept. 7 and strengthened to a category 5 with winds of up to 165 mph before moving on. About half of the island's 100,000 residents were left homeless, including many of St. George's University veterinary students living off campus with their pets.

Purdue is one of 17 U.S. veterinary schools affiliated with the St. George's veterinary program.

A relief fund to help the St. George's veterinary students at Purdue is being established at Lafayette Bank and Trust by the Purdue Student Chapter of the American Veterinary Medical Association.
