Campus notes National Disability Employment Awareness Month

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University's Affirmative Action Office is offering several events open to the public in October to mark National Disability Employment Awareness Month.

Events are as follows:

• Wednesday, Oct. 6 – Addressing Depression in the Workplace. Noon to 1 p.m. Stewart Center, Room 204. Steven Morris, staff psychologist at Counseling and Psychological Services, will talk about depression, its effects in the workplace and when individuals should seek help.

• Thursday, Oct. 7 – ADA for Supervisors. 10 a.m. to noon. Stewart Center, Room 318. What constitutes a disability, how to recognize an employee's request for a reasonable accommodation and what to do next. Gina Kerr, assistant director for equity in hiring in the Affirmative Action Office, said all campus supervisors are encouraged to attend this session.

• Tuesday, Oct. 19 – Vote 2004: Accessibility and Issues. 1-2:30 p.m. Stewart Center, Room 318. The 2005 Audio Conference Series begins with a look at the status of accessibility of the voting process and what if any progress has been made toward implementation of the Help American Vote Act.

• Wednesday, Oct. 27 – ADA Overview. 1:30-3:30 p.m. Stewart Center, Room 313. Learn about the Americans with Disabilities Act – what the law means, its history and what is in store for the future.
