September 17, 2004 Scientist to reveal benefits of fluorine chemistryWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. An internationally renowned scientist will speak on fluorine chemistry's importance to industry, delivering the third in an annual series of fluorine lectures jointly sponsored by Purdue University and Great Lakes Chemical Corp. Shlomo Rozen, a professor at Tel Aviv University of Israel, will speak on "Fluorine: From Back Stage to Center Stage" at 4:40 p.m. on Oct. 7 in Purdue's Wetherill Hall, Room 104. The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will be preceded by a 3:45 p.m. reception in Wetherill Hall, Room 201. Rozen is well-known as a fluorine chemist, having been invited to speak at hundreds of universities and plenary lectures worldwide. Several chemical reactions involving fluorine are referred to as "Rozen reactions" in scientific circles. Purdue professor of chemistry P.V. Ramachandran, one of the world's leading experts on fluorine chemistry, has been working with Great Lakes Chemical Corp. to prepare fluorine-containing molecules with beneficial properties. Great Lakes Chemical sponsors this annual lecture series to provide a medium for exchanging ideas and educating the public on the benefits of fluorine chemistry, among which are materials that make non-stick pans possible and keep skiers warm and dry. Each year the company brings one of world's leading fluorine chemists to Purdue for a day of discussions and seminars.
