Family Day offers fun, food, information for Purdue families

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Family Day tradition continues at Purdue University on Sept. 11 as students and their families are treated to a day of tours, dinners, talks and music.

Purdue President Martin C. Jischke and First Lady Patty Jischke will address parents during the Parents Convocation from 9-9:30 a.m. in Stewart Center's Loeb Playhouse.

From 9:30-11 a.m., parents and other family members will have the opportunity to tour schools, attend receptions and special presentations hosted by schools and departments. Students and their families will have the opportunity to talk with faculty and staff members.

Families and students can relax and enjoy music and a dinner of barbecued ribs and smoked chicken from 3:30-6:30 p.m. at the Boilermaker Barbecue. Dinners are $10.99 for adults and students and $6.99 for children under 10. The barbecue will be in Academy Park. In case of rain, the barbecue will be in Union Market at Purdue Memorial Union. Coupons, which will be on information tables that morning are redeemable at the barbecue.

A 7:30 p.m. concert by Recycled Percussion at Loeb Playhouse will top the day. Tickets are $5 per person.

Recycled Percussion uses recycled tools, barrels, basement garbage, building site leftovers, and pots and pans to create an entertaining musical sound. Composed of four men who make music with power tools as well as drumsticks, Recycled Percussion assaults the stage with a rhythmic fashion that has been described as "pandemonium" and "musical mayhem."

Recycled Percussion has played more than 300 college shows in 45 states, performed at halftime shows for both the NBA and NFL, and has appeared before audiences at casinos, theme parks, fairs and festivals.

The group was voted "Best Musical Performance of the Year" recently by Campus Activities Magazine. The Boston Globe wrote, "Recycled Percussion helps to boost all festive atmospheres."
