Purdue NotebookSeptember 3, 2004 Appointments and promotions Victor Raskin, professor of English, was named interim director of interdisciplinary programs in the School of Liberal Arts. This office oversees American, Asian, classical, comparative literature, film, Italian, linguistics, medieval, philosophy and literature, and religious studies. Patrice Rankine, associate professor of classics in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, has been named the director of classical studies. Ronnie Wilbur, professor of speech sciences, has been named director of linguistics. Nancy Gabin, associate professor of history, was named interim director for American studies. Velma Jones has been appointed director of development-Lafayette in annual giving. Jones previously was associate director of the Telefund and, prior to that, was a student caller.
Campus activities The combined Purdue ROTC units will have a ceremony to commemorate the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The event begins at 8 a.m. Friday (Sept. 10) in front of the Purdue Armory. There will be a flag raising, remarks by Navy ROTC chaplain Lt. Cmdr. David C. Mills and Capt. Michael R. "Ollie" Oliver, followed by the playing of "Taps."
Faculty and staff honors Sandra Barnes, assistant professor of sociology and African-American studies, will present findings based on her research and teaching on health care, sexuality and AIDS in Afro-descendent communities during the Sex, Sexuality, Taboos, Myths and Relationships panel at the Congressional Black Caucus in Washington, D.C., on Sept. 9. Liz Grauerholz, professor of sociology, won the American Sociological Association Section on Teaching and Learning's Hans O. Mauksch Award. This national award is given every year in recognition of a professor's excellence in teaching undergraduates.
