August 17, 2004 Purdue vet school marks 20th year of live spay/neuter demos at fairWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Purdue University President Martin C. Jischke will be the keynote speaker at a reception on Wednesday (Aug. 20) at the Indiana State Fair in honor of the 20th anniversary of the School of Veterinary Medicine's live surgery demonstrations at the fair. The reception, in the Pioneer Our Land Pavilion, will immediately follow the live surgery demonstration scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. Other speakers include Dr. Alan Rebar, dean of veterinary medicine; William Stinson, executive director of the Indiana State Fair; and Dr. Janet Savill-Sizelove, president of the Indiana State Veterinary Association, which is a co-sponsor of the live surgery demonstrations. "The purpose of these demonstrations is to educate our citizens about veterinary medicine, in general, and about the value and importance of spay and neuter surgeries for dogs and cats," said Kevin Doerr, director of alumni relations and public affairs for the School of Veterinary Medicine. "All of the pets that are operated on have been pre-adopted into homes." The live surgery demonstrations were started 20 years ago to bring attention to the need to spay and neuter pets. Among the top reasons to spay and neuter are to reduce pet overpopulation, decrease the risk of cancer, decrease infection rates, reduce urine marking and aggression, and limit roaming in males.
