Purdue Black Cultural Center honors student staff

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Several students were recently honored during the Purdue University Black Cultural Center's 31st annual awards banquet for their leadership and service on the center's student staff, participation in the center's performing ensembles, and outstanding academic achievement.

Abigail Cramton, a 2004 graduate from Oak Park, Ill, majoring in public relations and employed at the Black Cultural Center as a receptionist, received the 2004 Howard G. McCall Award. The award is presented to a student staff member who demonstrated consistency in leadership, service and dedication to the center. She received a plaque and a monetary award.

Michael L. Washington Jr., a 2004 graduate from Indianapolis majoring in electrical engineering technology, was a member of the center's Black Voices of Inspiration and the 2004 recipient of the Nettie L. Hubbard Award. The award was established to recognize the contributions and achievements of students who are participants in one or more of the Black Cultural Center's performing ensembles and who have consistently and willingly contributed to the betterment of the center. He plays bass, piano and drums. He received a certificate and a monetary award.

Service award recipients were: Bryant D. Blackmoore, Charlotte, N.C.; Theresa Brown, St. Louis, Mo.; Dewane Burns II, Memphis, Tenn.; Rudy Chervil, West Lafayette, Ind.; Darryl Griffin-Simmons, Norristown, Pa.; Ingram Rashad London, Coldspring, Texas; Jamie Pufahl, Dyer, Ind.; Marvin R. Rhodes Jr., Indianapolis; LaKara Tishon Rochester, Lafayette, Ind.; Tanya Schatzman, Cleveland Heights, Ohio; Lauren Spicer, Fort Wayne, Ind.; Jamin A. Walker, Indianapolis; and Dadrian Williams-Eason, Indianapolis.

Special honor pen and pencil sets were presented to: Latrice Nicole Brown, Indianapolis; Brandon Cassimere, Opelousas, La.; Brant Cassimere, Opelousas, La.; Patrice Holmes, Indianapolis; Courtney Marie Jackson, Indianapolis; Micere Sidi Oden, Chicago; Jennifer Stokes, Detroit; Jamelle Walker, Indianapolis; Jamie D. Walker, Indianapolis; Faithe Ways, Lathrup Village, Mich.; and Craig D. Wesley, Gary, Ind.

In 2001 the Black Cultural Center established the Academic Achievement Award to recognize a student staff member or workshop participant with the highest fall semester grade point average. This award promotes a positive example for other Purdue students to set educational goals and strive for excellence. Monetary awards were presented to the 2004 recipients, who were: Crystal Dahl, Black Cultural Center staff, Ypsilanti, Mich., and Tariboma Teme, Black Voices of Inspiration, Indianapolis.
