August 10, 2004 Boilerfest program to take place Aug. 26 at Black Cultural CenterWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. The Purdue University Black Cultural Center's eighth annual Boilerfest New Student Orientation program will take place from 4-6 p.m. Aug. 26 in the center parking lot. Boilerfest is a casual interactive program that introduces first-year students to the Black Cultural Center, Performing Arts Ensembles and the Black Cultural Center library. Free food, live entertainment and prizes also will be available. Lynnette Daughtry, Black Cultural Center program adviser, said Boilerfest gives students an opportunity to connect with the center early on in the semester. "The Black Cultural Center provides a variety of services and opportunities for students to help them excel at the university," Daughtry said. "Boilerfest is not only an opportunity for the students to connect with each other, but to connect with the BCC and the staff as well. The first few weeks in any new environment can be a very overwhelming time. The Boilerfest orientation program has been designed to assist in making that transition easier." Several university officials will serve as "celebrity chefs," and more than 20 student organizations and university departments will have information tables set up with representatives to answer questions. Students will have an opportunity to see live performances by the Black Cultural Center Performing Arts Ensembles, which include Black Voices of Inspiration, Haraka Writers, Jahari Dance Troupe and New Directional Players. Boilerfest is free and open to the public.
