July 21, 2004 4-H celebrates 100 years in Indiana at 2004 state fairWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - This year marks the 100th anniversary of 4-H in Indiana, and just in time for the celebration, the doors will open at the newly renovated 4-H buildings at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. The 4-H Exhibit Hall and 4-H Centennial Hall, formerly the boy's dormitory, will house 4-H exhibits and interactive centers where 4-Hers and the public can help create projects in woodworking, cooking, sewing and computers. Events will take place during the Indiana State Fair, which runs Aug. 11-22. Carl Broady, Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service 4-H youth specialist, said the products made at the state fair will go to a good cause. "The quilts made at the sewing center are going to area shelters, the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army," he said. "And the art easels made in the woodworking center will be donated to preschool centers and Head Start." A grand opening ceremony for the buildings is scheduled for 8 a.m. on Aug. 11 in Celebration Park, located just in front of the 4-H Exhibit Hall. Gov. Joe Kernan will attend, and country music artist Joe Diffie and the 4-H Chorus will perform on the free stage. The $7.5 million facelift on the 4-H complex in the northwest corner of the fairgrounds began in 2003. The project was funded by donations from 4-H alumni and friends, the Indiana State Fair, and the Indiana 4-H Foundation. Other centennial celebration activities at the state fair include: Aug. 11-22 - Centennial quilt display, all day, 4-H Centennial Hall. Aug. 11-22 - Free birthday cake, 3 p.m. each day, 4-H Exhibit Hall. Aug. 14 - 4-H Chorus performance, 2 p.m., 4-H Exhibit Hall Aug. 14 - 4-H alumni reunion, 3 p.m., 4-H Exhibit Hall. Aug. 14 - Special 4-H alumni recognition, 3:15 p.m., 4-H Exhibit Hall. Aug. 14 - Jerry and Karen Ross presentation, 4:30 p.m., Our Land Pavilion. The Rosses will talk about their years in 4-H and how 4-H affected their lives. "Sue Ellen Reed, state school superintendent, and astronaut Jerry Ross and United Space Alliance food scientist Karen (Pearson) Ross will be honored during the alumni reunion," Broady said. All day on Aug. 14 in the 4-H Exhibit Hall, alumni can sign meet and greet boards to get in touch with former 4-H peers and register with the Indiana 4-H Foundation.
