July 16, 2004 Appointments and promotions Thomas W. Atkinson has been appointed associate dean of the Graduate School. Atkinson, previously the school's assistant dean, will be responsible for initiatives to enhance the quality of graduate student life, orientation, graduate student government, health care, childcare, employment issues and new programs that he will develop. He also will represent the school in the Office of International Students and Scholars, Human Resources Services, Office of the Dean of Students and Office of the Registrar. Faculty and staff honors William C. Oaks, associate professor in the Department of Engineering Education, was honored with the Engineering Education Excellence Award. The award is presented annually by the Professional Engineers in Education practice division of the National Society of Professional Engineers to recognize faculty who have demonstrated the ability to link engineering education with professional practice. Oakes is co-director of Engineering Projects in Community Service, a Purdue-based, 15-university service-learning program that connects engineering students with community organizations to complete long-term design projects. He is currently developing a curriculum and implementing a series of regional workshops on service-learning in engineering in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, American Association for Higher Education and American Campus Compact.
