June 22, 2004 Indiana Space Grant forms partnership with Louis Stokes AllianceWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. The Indiana Space Grant Consortium, based at Purdue University, has been awarded a $40,000 grant from NASA to join with the Indiana Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation, a five-year program funded by the National Science Foundation. The program links undergraduate students at Ball State University, Indiana University, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, and Purdue's Calumet and West Lafayette campuses. The grant is part of NASA's work force development efforts and is devoted to improving recruitment and retention of undergraduate students into science, technology, engineering and mathematics careers. The partnership, to begin during the 2004-05 academic year, strives to: Encourage the Louis Stokes Alliance learning community across the five campuses to explore NASA-related projects within majors in science, technology, engineering and math. Introduce students to NASA employment and research opportunities in science and engineering. Provide support for mentors and recruiting efforts to bring more students into the Louis Stokes Alliance community. Recruit K-12 students using alliance students as mentors and a tournament-style mathematics game. "We are very excited to work with the provost's office to bring space science and engineering opportunities to Louis Stokes Alliance students," said Barrett Caldwell, an associate professor of industrial engineering and director of the Indiana Space Grant Consortium. "The program helps us to leverage the NASA money to reach many more students than we could hope to do alone." Information about the Louis Stokes Alliance is available online. Stokes is a former U.S. congressman from Ohio. The Space Grant Consortium is a group of nine universities and four institutions that works with schoolchildren, teachers, college students, industry and museums to increase the public's knowledge about the science of space exploration. It is one of 52 such groups nationwide funded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
