June 16, 2004 Indy workshop to focus on caregiver training and resourcesWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - A workshop sponsored by Purdue University will provide information on how to tap into the help that's available for family members and others who provide in-home care for the sick and those with disabilities. "Caregiving in the Heartland 2004: Training the Trainers" will highlight services that can assist those caring for others. The seminar will run from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., June 29 at the Arthritis Foundation office at 8660 Guion Road in Indianapolis. "For example, transportation can be a big problem when you are caring for someone who has a disability," said Paul Jones, rural safety specialist with Purdue's Breaking New Ground Resource Center in the School of Agriculture. "This is particularly true in rural areas, and we will discuss services and resources that can provide solutions to the problem." Jones said networking and sharing common lessons learned is also a big part of the workshop. He said participants will learn from those who provide caregiving services and some of the agencies that offer resources. "By calling it a train the trainer workshop, we hope that many people who attend will go back to their communities and provide similar information sessions for local caregivers," Jones said. The workshop is targeted for professionals in social service agencies, caregiver providers, volunteers who assist caregivers and anyone willing to put on similar workshops at the local level. The cost to attend is $25, which includes lunch, snack breaks and a kit of resources that participants can use to provide local training workshops. Registration deadline is June 25. For registration information call (800) 825-4264.
