June 11, 2004 Appointments and promotions Janet Afary, associate professor of history and women's studies, was elected president of the Association for Middle East Women's Studies. She also was elected to serve in 2005 as president of the International Society for Iranian Studies. The Purdue University Police Department has hired Chad D. Robinson as a patrol officer. A native of Brookston, Ind., Robinson earned a bachelor's degree in management from Purdue in 1996. Before starting with the police department, he worked in management for a local excavating company. Jeffrey W. Gilger, professor and chair of the Department of Child and Family Studies at California State University at Los Angeles, will be the new associate dean for discovery and faculty development in Purdue's School of Education, effective Aug. 1. Gilger is a scholar in the areas of human development, learning and communication disorders, and in the environmental and genetic basis of individual differences. Gilger's responsibilities will include maintaining the school's research and funding agenda, developing research mentoring and support for faculty, and facilitating collaborative research initiatives with other schools. Sidney M. Moon, a professor of educational studies, will assume the position of associate dean of learning and engagement for Purdue's School of Education, effective July 1. She is serving as interim associate dean for academic programs and also serves as director of the school's Gifted Education Resource Institute. Her duties will include oversight and coordination of all undergraduate and graduate programs, faculty recruitment and retention, and programs related to study abroad experiences, service-learning and professional development schools. Dale A. Harris has been appointed director of Continuing Engineering Education, effective June 14. Harris is director of experimental e-learning in the Stanford University Center for Professional Development. At Stanford, he has been responsible for developing the first technology platform for offering Stanford courses online, implementing a graduate-level online degree program, and developing several professional certificate programs. Before joining Stanford, Harris held executive and management positions with Pacific Bell, Bank of America and the Letterman Army Hospital & Institute of Research. As director of Continuing Engineering Education, Harris will work with faculty and school heads to develop new professional development programs and certifications, as well as distance learning and classroom technology use for the College of Engineering. He also will serve as a professor in the Department of Engineering Education. Philip H. Swain, who was interim Continuing Engineering Education director, will return to his faculty position in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Alumni honors Marketing professors who received their doctorates from the Krannert School of Management are among the nation's best in terms of the impact of their research on the profession, according to a recent study by Academic Assessment Services. The Purdue graduates were one of only five sets of alumni to be ranked in the top 15 on each of five separate measures of influence. The five measures and Purdue's ranking were: No. 13 in number of graduates, No. 10 in total citations in other academic journals, No. 12 in average citations, No 12 in median citations and No. 9 in adjusted median citations. The results were presented on May 27 at the Academy of Marketing Sciences annual meeting in Vancouver.
