Purdue alumni honored for community service

WEST LAFAYETTE – The Purdue Alumni Association recently presented its citizenship award to three alumni who have devoted hours of service to their communities.

Award recipients were Barry Eversole, of Avon, Ind., and Richard H. and Jeanne Muller Ward, of Crawfordsville, Ind.

Barry Eversole, a 1971 pharmacy graduate, has volunteered at Westlake Elementary School in Indianapolis for the past 20 years. Three mornings a week, he mentors fifth- and sixth-grade students at the school. He has worked more than 5,000 hours with children of various abilities, from gifted to those with mild to moderate learning disabilities. Eversole used vacation days from his job at CVS Pharmacy to attend field trips with the students.

Richard H. and Jeanne Muller Ward have devoted a lifetime of service to the Linden, Montgomery County, Crawfordsville and Purdue communities. Richard, a 1943 graduate of the School of Agriculture, has served the Linden United Methodist Church, Ag Alumni Association and Boy Scouts of America. Jeanne, a 1950 graduate in consumer and family sciences, has been involved with the Linden Extension Homemakers, Girl Scouts, Linden Public Library Board of Trustees and the Mission Minded Merry Matrons, also known as the 4 Ms. The women's group fill various needs in the community, from sewing lap robes for hospital patients to helping families in crisis.
