Ukrainian group to visit Indiana for economics lessons

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Indiana Council for Economic Education (ICEE) will host seven educational leaders from the Ukraine on June 20-27 to help them learn more about economics education.

This tour is one of several exchanges that the National Council on Economic Education has coordinated to showcase the economic education system in the United States.

"During this particular tour, we will demonstrate to our visitors the degree of support and coordination necessary at the local, regional and national levels in order to successfully deliver K-12 economic education," said Beverly Brewer, director of development and public relations for ICEE, which is located at Purdue University.

Visiting leaders represent the Ukraine's educational and teacher certification programs.

The group will travel to Lafayette, West Lafayette, Muncie and Indianapolis.

In the Lafayette-West Lafayette area, they will tour the Purdue Research Park, Subaru of Indiana Automotive and meet with George Hynd, dean of Purdue's School of Education, on June 21-22. The group also will travel to Muncie on June 22 to attend the Ball State University Center for Economic Education summer workshop, Energy, Economics and the Environment. The group will tour the Indiana Statehouse and state museum while in Indianapolis on June 23-24. They will meet with Suellen Reed, Indiana superintendent of public instruction; Judith Briganti, president of Indiana State Teachers Association; and Barbara Underwood, superintendent of Carmel Clay Schools. The group will leave for Washington, D.C., on June 27.

The ICEE is a non-profit educational organization that partners with leaders from business, labor, agriculture, education and government to increase economic literacy in Indiana. Its mission is to prepare students to become active citizens and productive members of the economy by providing them with the ability to make sound economic decisions.
